American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock 2009

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

dyson-racing-mazda-lmp2-alms Fresh off the boat from the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans, the American Le Mans competitors came to Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Connecticut on July 18th. Great weather brought out large crowds for the main event.

Competition in GT2 class was really strong with new entrants BMW Rahal Letterman Racing M3’s making a very impressive appearance by battling the ever strong and reliable Flying Lizard Porsche GT3 RSRs and the mighty Risi Ferrari F430 GT. These three teams are nothing short of remarkable in their expertise at putting together truly competitive cars. Even with the wide diversity of tracks the teams encounter, they always adjust their race cars to perform at the top of the game. Rounding out the field in GT2 were the Ford GT, Panoz, Farnbacher Loles’ Porsche GT3 RSR and Vici Racing’s Porsche GT3 RSR.

Absent from Lime Rock this year was Audi Sport North American, Aston Martin, and Corvette Racing. Audi is saving the R15 for the big shows and Corvette Racing is in transition from GT1 to GT2.  Corvette will make it’s GT2 debut at Mid-Ohio in the coming weeks. Corvette was always impressive in GT1 class racing and we expect nothing less in GT2.

The Bear Mountain Car Show kicked off its 10th season of classic and collector car events on Wednesday, May 6th in the parking lot at the Bear Mountain Skating rink (next to The Inn).  Typically the show begins here and then moves to the large lawn next to The Bear Mountain Inn later in May.

Though threatening showers kept some party-goers at home shining chrome and waxing new paint in the garage, a few diehards came out to celebrate the new season.  As usual an eclectic mix of sports, exotic, antique and muscle cars came out to the show. (more…)

Porscheplatz: 12 Hours of Sebring 2009

Friday, April 24th, 2009

On March 21st, 2009 Sports Car Advisors visited Sebring International Raceway for the 2009 12 Hours of Sebring.   Delayed flights into Florida and bad weather on the way up to the raceway put us behind schedule and so we did not catch the start of the race.  By the time we arrived at Sebring, the new BMW M3’s had already DNF’d.

Aside from the always competitive racing of the ALMS cars, one of the highlights was the Porscheplatz.  Porsche Club of American (PCA) always does a great job of putting in a nice hospitality tent for members and aligning member Porsches for viewing.  Sports Car Advisors was welcomed into the Porscheplatz as fellow PCA members watched the race in the tent, we browsed the gorgeous Porsches parked in the grass nearby.  Following are some of the great pictures of the Porsches we found. The BMW Art Cars have arrived in New York City and are on display in Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall through April 6th, 2009.  Walking into Vanderbilt Hall and seeing these cars is simply amazing.  Most impressive is the burst of color, particularly the Roy Lichtenstein 320i and the Andy Warhol M1.

The exhibit is five cars in total.  Included in the exhibit are the 1977 Group 5 Racing 320i painted by Roy Lichtenstein, the 1976 3.0 CSL painted by Frank Stella, the 1979 Group 4 Racing M1 painted by Andy Warhol, the 1986 635csi painted by R. Raushenberg, and the Z4 Roadster which was driven through wet paint on canvas-like surface to create a 30 by 40 foot.  The Z4 painting was by artist Robin Rhode. (more…)

Best Driving Roads: Blue Ridge Parkway

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of America’s Best Driving Roads, not only for its great driving qualities, but also for the scenic views it offers. The Parkway runs from Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park through the high-hills of North Carolina to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. Started as a massive public works project built during and after the Great Depression, today the Parkway is maintained with public and private funds. And when we say maintained it really is in fantastic shape. Well known amongst bikers and drivers alike for its great curves (rivaling those at “Tail of the Dragon” / Deal’s Gap) the Parkway offers unparalleled driving pleasure and scenic delights.
